Beginning in 2010, BioOhio is offering four one-time $1,250 scholarships to high school seniors in an effort to encourage and advance bioscience-related education and career interests in Ohio.
Scholarships are funded through a one-time donation by BioOhio and charitable contributions from organizations and individuals that share our goal of developing a world-class bioscience workforce in Ohio. Applicant Requirements:
To be considered for a scholarship, the student must live in Ohio, be a senior or senior-equivalent in good standing, and plan to pursue bioscience-related studies at an Ohio college. The following information must be sent to BioOhio (address below), postmarked by March 19, 2010:
- Completed scholarship application, including essay
- Copy of most recent high school transcript
- Two letters of recommendation from adults (not including relatives) familiar with the student’s preparation, passion for learning, and interest in pursuing a bioscience-related degree and/or career.
For payment of scholarship funds, the student must enroll in an Ohio 2- or 4-year college or university.
Scholarship Type:
Scholarships are merit-based and are not renewable.
Deadline:
Completed applications must be postmarked by no later than March 19, 2010. Scholarship winners will be notified by April 30. Recipients must provide proof of college or university acceptance prior to receipt of award. Scholarship money will be paid directly to each student’s college or university for tuition and/or other educational expenses.
Application Materials:
To be accepted for judging, the applicant must submit ALL REQUIRED ITEMS IN ONE PACKAGE as listed below (only the reference letters and transcripts may be sent separately, if necessary), postmarked by the March 19 deadline. Incomplete application packages will be immediately disqualified from judging with no follow up. The following items must be submitted to be considered:
- Application Form (access PDF here)
- Statement of Activities, Honors, Leadership - On a single sheet of paper (one-sided, 12pt. Times New Roman font), list school, community/volunteer, and work/internship activities, including years in which you participated and leadership positions held. List any honors or awards you earned.
- Copy of Transcript - High school transcript (either official or unofficial). May be mailed separately, if necessary.
- College Admission Composite Test Scores - A copy of all test results should be included.
- Two Letters of Recommendation - Two letters of recommendation from adults (not including relatives) familiar with the student’s preparation, passion for learning, and interest in pursuing a bioscience-related degree and/or career (e.g. science teacher, medical or animal health professional, bioscience business executive, etc.). Letters must include the recommender’s phone number and e-mail address and the full name of the student for whom the recommendation is written. Letters may be included in student application packet or sent separately by mail or email (mschutte@BioOhio.com) by March 19.
- Essay - An essay written by student applicant, no more than 500 words, doublespaced, typewritten, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, in response to this topic: BioOhio’s mission is to accelerate bioscience discovery, innovation, and commercialization of global value, driving economic growth and improved quality of life in Ohio. Describe how you could contribute to this mission during your academic pursuits and subsequently during your professional career.
Note: The application items of most importance to our judges will be: Essay (40%), Letters of Recommendation (25%), and Statement of Activities, Honors, Leadership (15%). Other factors and application items comprise the remaining 20%.

All of the above items must be postmarked no later than March 19, 2010. A single complete student application packet is preferred, but letters of recommendation and transcripts will be accepted separately from the student application packet, if necessary (check applicable box on application form).
