Sycamore High School senior-to-be Erik Bao was one of ten U.S. National BioGENEius Challenge finalists. Earlier this week, he and the other U.S. National finalists joined students from Canada and Australia to compete in the International BioGENEius Challenge. The U.S. National and International BioGENEius Challenges are competitions for high school students who demonstrate an exemplary understanding of biotechnology through science research projects.

Bao was honored for his presentation and research on Fetal Leptin Treatment Induces Lung Maturation in Preterm Newborn Lambs. According to an article on Fox19, “Bao’s research could one day prevent respiratory distress syndrome, which is a cause of death for many human newborns.”
