COVID-19 Inventor Showcase – Accelerated Mass Manufacturing of NP Swabs
December 15 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
The Optimizing Innovation, Commercialization, and Entrepreneurship of Biomedical Research program of The Ohio State University CCTS in partnership with the OSU Corporate Engagement Office and Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Office of Technology Commercialization is launching a new Panel Speaker Series in response to the urgent need for academic innovations to combat the global pandemic. This series will feature some of the work happening on our campuses at an unprecedented pace on the front lines of innovation.
Around the world, close to 40.5 million people have contracted COVID-19 and more than 1.1 million have died, according to Johns Hopkins University’s most recent data. CDC projects up to 282,000 US Covid-19 deaths by December 5. Surprisingly, one of the biggest bottlenecks in the soaring demand for diagnoses has not involved complex machines to detect genetic material or molecular biology. It’s been a shortage of nasopharyngeal swabs for collecting samples. Join us on December 15th to learn how an Ohio State coalition of university scientists, engineers and manufacturers came together to share resources and expertise to combat this shortage in the state of Ohio. The 3D-printed nasal pharyngeal swabs are meeting the dire demand in Ohio.
