The 2017 Heal Ohio Conference will be devoted to health professional presentations and feature informative learning sessions and keynote addresses. Activities are expected to provide an atmosphere rich in collaboration and networking for both career and research advancement.

8:00 am – Welcome Remarks

Ilene Shapiro, Summit County Executive

County Executive Ilene Shapiro became the fifth Summit County Executive in August of 2016. As Executive, Ilene manages a budget of nearly a half billion dollars and nine departments from Community and Economic Development, Finance and Budget to Job and Family Services, Sanitary Sewer Services and the Medical Examiner. Ilene Shapiro served on Summit County Council for nearly ten years, three of those as Council President. Ilene served on various committees during her tenure on Council, including serving as the Chair of the Planning and Economic Development Committee for seven years. Shapiro currently serves on The University of Akron Research Foundation Board, the County Executives of America Board of Directors and is a member of the Greater Akron Area ATHENA PowerLink governing body.

8:30 – Morning Keynote: New methods for skin grafting outpatients

Elof Eriksson, MD, PhD, President, Wound Healing Society

Born in Backe, Sweden, Dr. Elof Eriksson attended the University of Goteborg in Sweden, where he obtained his MD and PhD. Dr. Eriksson went on to train at hospitals in both Sweden and the US, including University of Chicago Hospitals, and Medical College of Virginia, where he completed a fellowship in plastic surgery. In 1986 Dr. Eriksson joined Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), where he was named Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery. In 2006, as a specialist in wound care, Dr. Eriksson initiated and oversaw the Wound Care Guidelines project, and initiative spearheaded by the Wound Healing Society which published guidelines for treatment and therapies for wound care. At BWH, Dr. Eriksson lead the creation of the research laboratory for Tissue Repair and Gene Therapy, which aims at creating better treatment for both acute and chronic wounds. Dr. Erikson also oversaw the creation of the Plastic Surgery Transplantation Program at BWH, a novel and unique program focused on state-of-the-art facial and hand transplantation.

9:45 – Military Wounds

Moderator: Eliot Mostow, MD, Professor and Chair, Dermatology Section, NEOMED

Dr. Mostow is a board certified dermatologist who began his special interest in wound care just after residency in 1992 when he was assigned to one of the first multidisciplinary wound clinics in the country.  There, at the University of Pittsburgh, he worked with Dr. David Steed (vascular surgery) and others to provide care that was exemplary in terms of being patient-centered and evidence-based. When he arrived in Akron, he was recruited to become part of a group that created a similar clinic merging dermatology, plastic surgery, orthopedic surgery and vascular surgery into a central clinic that continues to exist as the wound clinic we have today. Dr. Mostow has a Masters in Public Health (MPH) degree from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public health that fueled his interest in epidemiology and clinical research.

David Kay, MD, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Crystal Clinic

Dr. Kay is an Attending Staff Orthopaedic Surgeon at Crystal Clinic. He graduated from Medical College of Ohio at Toledo in 1980, where he also completed his internship. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Akron General Medical Center and his Foot and Ankle Reconstruction postgraduate fellowship at the Wagner Institute, University of Southern California. Dr. Kay is affiliated with Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center, Akron City Hospital, Akron General Medical Center, Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Akron, and Medina General Hospital.

Michael Magoline, MD, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Crystal Clinic

Dr. Magoline is a lifelong resident of the Akron area. He graduated with a BA in Chemistry from Washington and Lee University where he was a four-year varsity letterman in football, Academic All-American, recipient of a prestigious NCAA post-graduate scholarship, among other honors. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and completed his surgical internship at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas and his orthopaedic surgery residency at Summa Health System. He then completed a one-year fellowship in Arthroscopic Surgery and Sports Medicine at Orthopaedic Research of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia. He is board-certified in Orthopaedics. During his active duty service in the US Army, Dr. Magoline was the flight surgeon for the 159th Combat Aviation Group and was deployed multiple times. In 2003 he served as the chief of orthopaedic surgery at Bagram Hospital in Afghanistan. He is the recipient of three Army commendation medals.

Cliff Perez, MD, Surgeon, Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center

Dr. Clifford Perez is a general surgeon in Cleveland, Ohio and is affiliated with Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He received his medical degree from Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine, and completed his preliminary general surgery residency at Mayo Medical Center, his categorical general surgery residency at Creighton University Medical Center, and his surgical critical care fellowship at Hartford Hospital. Dr. Perez was a faculty general surgeon in the United States Air Force from 2006-2010, was appointed Major in July, 2006, and was a trauma surgeon in Afghanistan during five-month deployment in 2007.

9:45 – Wound Pathophysiology & Diagnostics

Moderator: Judy Fulton, PhD, Research Scientist, SerenaGroup

Judy Fulton, PhD is the Research Scientist for the Serena Group. She directs the R&D Innovation Lab located in the Life Sciences Incubator (REDIzone) on the NEOMED Campus in Rootstown, Ohio. Here she designs and performs basic science and pre-clinical trials to elucidate the mechanisms of action of various wound care products. She also develops new methodologies for creating and testing wound diagnostics and new treatment options. Judy has 25 years of experience in wound healing research and was previously the Director of Wound Research at Akron General Medical Center.

Kurt Lu, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Dermatology, Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center

Kurt Lu, M.D., joined the faculty at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in 2008. Dr. Lu’s medical training began at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. After a pre-doctoral fellowship at the University of Rochester in Immunology/Dermatology he completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Lu then acquired a post-doctoral fellowship in Cellular and Molecular Dermatology at Case Western Reserve University combined with a Dermatology Residency at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. His research focus is on the function of the skin immune system, specifically to investigate (1) how macrophages protect the skin from external injury and (2) how homeostasis is restored to minimize bystander damage to surrounding tissue.

Heather Powell, PhD, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, The Ohio State University

Dr. Heather Powell is currently an Associate Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at The Ohio State University.  She joined OSU in 2008 after earning a B.S. in Paleobiology and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at the Shriners Burns Hospital. Her current research interests include hierarchical scaffolding for tissue engineering, engineered skin mechanics, fibrosis/anti-scar therapy development, and materials for large segmental bone defects.  She was the recipient of the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities, The Distinguished Undergraduate Research Mentor Award (OSU) and the Herman Weed Award for Excellence in Teaching (OSU).

Sashwati Roy, PhD, Professor of General Surgery, The Ohio State University

Sashwati Roy, PhD is a Professor of Surgery and Director of laser capture Molecular Analysis facility at the Ohio State University Columbus Ohio. Her research interests include wound inflammation, mechanisms of resolution of diabetic wound inflammation, role of miRNA in tissue repair processes. Their laboratory was first to identify that engulfment of apoptotic cells by wound macrophages serves as a major molecular cue that drives resolution of inflammation and impairment of this pathway in diabetic ulcers. Dr. Roy has over 200 peer review publications. Dr. Roy’s research is currently funded by National Institute of Health (NIDDK & NINR, NIH) funded to investigate on the role of inflammation and infection in diabetic wounds. She has served as committee chairs, secretary, executive board member at the national Wound Healing Society. She is currently serving as President-elect for the Society.

Thomas Serena, MD, FACS, FACHM, MAPWCA, CEO and Medical Director, SerenaGroup

Dr. Serena is the Founder and Medical Director of SerenaGroup. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Wound Healing Society and Association for the Advancement of Wound Care. He serves as the Vice President of the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine had has been appointed as the President of the American Professional Wound Care Association. He has done extensive medical relief work with Health Volunteers Overseas and serves as chairman of the AAWC Global Volunteers/HVO Steering Committee. He currently consults for the government of Rwanda on AIDS prevention research. Dr. Serena is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of The College of William and Mary and Penn State Medical School. He completed his residency in Surgery at The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center with fellowship training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Southern Illinois University.

11:45 – Lunch Keynote: The Cutting Edge: Autologous Regeneration of Tissue

Ashish Bhatia, MD, FAAD, Associate Professor of Clinical Dermatology, Northwestern University Department of Dermatology

Dr. Bhatia is an internationally recognized expert in healthcare innovation, being involved in the inception and development of numerous drugs and devices that have come to market over the last decade. He works with bioengineers, basic science researchers, and innovators in pharmaceutical and device research to apply the latest technologies to improve the lives of patients. Dr. Bhatia received his medical degree from Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honors society and earned awards for both achievement and service. He completed his residency in Dermatology at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals where he served as Chief Resident. Subsequently, he completed an intensive fellowship in Mohs Surgery, Cutaneous Oncology, Reconstruction, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery at SkinCare Physicians in Boston, MA under the direction of the leaders in the field from Boston University, Harvard University, and Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Bhatia is an Associate Professor of Clinical Dermatology at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Bhatia remains active with the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, the American College of Mohs Surgery, and the American Medical Association.

1:15 – Burns & Complex Wounds

Moderator: Christi Cavaliere, MD, Physician, Plastic Surgery, Cleveland Clinic

Christi Cavaliere is a plastic surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic and medical director of wound care for the Cleveland Clinic. She is the fellowship director for the Surgical Wound Care program. She trained at the University of Michigan and completed a clinical research fellowship through the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars program.

Brandon Jonard, Orthopedic Surgery, Summa Health System

Brandon Jonard obtained his Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering at The Ohio State University where he also obtained a minor in Biomedical Engineering. Prior to medical school he was employed with both Ethicon-Endo Surgery as well as PharmaForce, Inc. He subsequently obtained his Doctorate of Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University. His post-graduate training within Orthopeadic Surgery is currently in process at Summa Health System. Once finished with residency training, he plans to complete a fellowship in Orthopeadic Trauma Surgery as well as a second fellowship in Orthopeadic Oncology.

Anjay Khandelwal, MD, Surgeon, MetroHealth

Dr. Anjay Khandelwal is the Director of MetroHealth’s Comprehensive Burn Care Center – one of Ohio’s only Verified Adult and Pediatric Burn Centers.  In addition, he is the Co-Director of the Institute of Burn Ethics, a unique group of individuals focused on the ethics of burn and wound care.  He is an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.  Dr. Khandelwal maintain expertise in acute and reconstructive burn management as well as Trauma and Surgical Critical Care.   He is actively involved with international outreach, burn education and burn research.

Scott Rapp, MD, Attending Plastic Surgeon, Kentucky Center for Cosmetic and Reconstructive SurgeryShriners Hospital For ChildrenNorton Children’s Hospital (Kosair Children’s)

Scott Rapp, MD is a board certified pediatric cleft and craniofacial plastic surgeon who currently practices in Louisville, KY since completing his fellowship at Stanford. His clinical interests are in addressing complex craniofacial anomalies and cleft care both in the states and abroad. As a Senior Investigator at the Shriners Hospital for Children Cincinnati, his lab is involved with translational research utilizing large animal models focusing on regenerative medicine, tissue engineering and medical device development.

Richard Schlanger, MD, Physician, General Surgery, The Ohio State University

Dr. Schlanger, originally from New York, started his educational journey at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, graduation in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He returned to New York and obtained a Master’s degree in chemistry from Hofstra University in 1974. Later, working with Dr. George Delsol, he began to identify cancer antigens which led to early use of tumor markers such as CEA. As a result of his efforts, he was awarded a doctor of medicine degree in 1981 and a Ph.D. in 1982 with a degree in immunohistochemistry. In 2005, the Comprehensive Wound Center at The Ohio State University was established, where Dr. Schlanger serves as clinical director as well as director of outpatient hyperbaric therapy. During the earthquake in Italy, he was part of an advanced team to aid in wound care for its victims, as well as serving as a consultant for the earthquake victims in Haiti.

1:15 – Biomaterials & Biomechanics

Moderator: Brian Davis, PhD, Chairman of Biomedical Engineering, University of Akron

Dr. Davis has over 25 years’ experience with medical devices, sensor-based systems and biomedical engineering. He has represented the field at the international level, including serving as President of the International Society of Biomechanics from 2005 to 2007. At the Cleveland Clinic he was the Vice-Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, with particular research interests in diabetic foot ulceration. He is currently the Chairman of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Akron where he has continued his research into diabetic foot disorders and prosthetics. His research has been funded by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, NIH, the State of Ohio, the American Diabetes Association and through the Veterans Administration.

Walt Horne, DVM, Executive Director, Industry Relations, NEOMED

Dr. Horne is Executive Director of Industry Relations for the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) where he has been affiliated with the REDIzone since its inception in 2012.  He is board certified by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine and served as the Director of Comparative Medicine at NEOMED from 1996 through 2013.  Prior to that he was the Associate Director for Veterinary Services at Case Western Reserve University for 10 years.  Dr. Horne has been involved in the clinical care and research use of animals for over 30 years.

Jed Johnson, PhD, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, RenovoDerm

Dr. Johnson received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering with a focus on biomaterials in 2010 from The Ohio State University.  He co-founded and currently serves as the Chief Technology Officer of Nanofiber Solutions Inc. in the spring of 2009 based upon state-of-the-art nanofiber scaffolds for cell culture and tissue engineering applications as an extension of his thesis work.  Dr. Johnson led the team that won 1st Place in the 2009 Deloitte Business Plan Competition and has served as principal investigator on numerous NIH and NSF SBIR/STTR grants in addition to Ohio Third Frontier grants.

John West, PhD, University Trustee Professor, Kent State University

John West is a Trustees Research Professor at Kent State University. Since December 2016, he has been serving as Interim Director of the Liquid Crystal Institute and Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary Program. West holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the College of William & Mary, and a master’s in chemistry and Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University. He joined Kent State in 1984 as a senior research fellow of the Liquid Crystal Institute (LCI). He served as director of LCI and the National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center for Liquid Crystalline Optical Materials (ALCOM) from 1996 to 2002, and served as vice president for research and dean of graduate studies at Kent State from 2003 to 2010.

3:30 – Chronic Wounds

Moderator: Windy Cole, DPM, FACFAS, Adjunct Faculty & Director of Wound Care Research, KSU College of Podiatric Medicine, Medical Director Wound Care Center, UH Ahuja Hospital

Dr. Cole is a native of Youngstown, Ohio. She completed her undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Cole obtained her podiatry degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine where she graduated with honors. She then completed her surgical residency training at University Hospitals Health System in Cleveland, Ohio. She is an active member of the APMA, OPMA and AAWC. Dr. Cole has been in practice in Northeastern Ohio for 17 years. Her interest is in limb salvage and wound care. She is an Adjunct Professor and Director of Wound Care Research at KSU College of Podiatric Medicine. She serves as Director of Wound Care Services for Cleveland Regency Hospitals and is the Medical Director at University Hospitals Ahuja Wound Care Center.

Michael Canales, DPM, Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, Saint Vincent Charity Medical Center

Dr. Canales was raised in Rochester, NY before graduating from The Ohio State University with a degree Molecular Genetics. He is a member of the St. Vincent Charity Hospital’s Spine & Orthopedic Institute in Cleveland. His surgical experience is comprehensive, ranging from forefoot surgery to total ankle replacement. He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and currently lectures nationally on topics relevant to foot and ankle surgery. Dr. Canales was a member of The Ohio State University’s National Championship Gymnastics Team in 1996. He and his wife, 1996 Olympic Gold Medal Gymnast, Dominique Moceanu and their two children reside in Hinckley, Ohio.

Jeffrey Junko, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon, Summa Health System

Dr. Junko has been in the Akron area since graduating from the University of Akron in 1995. Following graduation from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in 2000, he completed a Residency in Orthopaedics at Summa Healthcare System. He then pursued a foot and ankle fellowship at the Universities of Iowa and Utah. As a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he decided to return to the midwest and assume the role of Associate Director of Residency Education at Summa Health in 2006. He was promoted to Residency Director in 2008. In addition to his practice, he is the program director for the orthopaedic residency at Summa.

Moderator: Bob Anthony, MBA, Owner, REA Incorporated

Robert E. Anthony is President of REA Incorporated. Mr. Anthony holds a BS degree in Biology from Denison University, a MS in Biology from The University of Akron and a MBA from Baldwin-Wallace College. He is a life-long resident of Akron, Ohio. Community and business interests include: Bath United Church of Christ; past Revere Youth Sports Program; past Advisory Board Akron General Wellness Center; past Advisory Board Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Study University of Akron; past Hattie Larlham Board; BioOhio, Greater Akron Chamber and other business related organizations.

Justin Baker, PhD, Director Business Development, Viscus Biologics

Dr. Justin Baker graduated magna cum laude and with university honors in mechanical engineering from Brigham Young University (BYU). Dr. Baker subsequently earned his PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Utah. A postdoctoral fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic brought him and his family to Cleveland in 2010. Since then Dr. Baker has worked for a number of local start-up and mid-size medical device companies, and his family has grown to include five children. In 2014, Dr. Baker was certified in Regulatory Affairs (RAC). He currently serves as the Director of Business Development for Viscus Biologics.

Michael Kelly, MD, PhD, Chief Research Officer, Akron Children’s Hospital

Dr. Michael Kelly joined Akron Children’s Hospital in May of 2017 in a newly created position, Chief Research Officer, where he is responsible for the operational and strategic oversight at the Rebecca D. Considine Research Institute. Dr. Kelly attended the University of Cincinnati in 1980-1985, staying on to finish his MD, PhD in 1993. Dr. Kelly then completed his Pediatric residency and Hematology/Oncology fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis in 1998.  He was most recently the Pediatric Cancer Program Director at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Dr. Kelly’s research has focused on developing new, “first in children” therapies for pediatric leukemia, brain tumors and vascular tumors and anomalies.

Gerald Mearini, PhD, Founder & President, Teraphysics

Dr. Gerald T. Mearini received a Ph.D. in experimental thin film physics in 1991 from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU).  He pioneered chemical vapor deposited (CVD) diamond-based vacuum electronic devices with Dr. Jim Dayton at NASA Lewis from 1992-95.  In 1995 He founded GENVAC AeroSpace, Inc., the predecessor of Teraphysics, to develop next-generation vacuum electron devices and video/audio transmission and processing technology with significant  performance enhancement due to the incorporation of diamond. He is the inventor on 19 patents involving CVD diamond, diamond-based devices and thin film technology.  He has numerous publications and is both an Adjunct Professor of Physics and the Chairman of the Engineering-Physics Advisory Committee at CWRU.

Mark Shirtliff, PhD, Chief Technology Officer, CelerDx

Dr. Shirtliff is a Professor in the Department of Microbial Pathogenesis in the School of Dentistry and the School of Medicine at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dr. Shirtliff began his biofilm infection training at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He received his PhD in 2001. He then traveled to the Center for Biofilm Engineering in Montana as a postdoctoral fellow. Dr. Shirtliff became an Assistant Research Professor in 2003 in the Department of Microbiology and later that year accepted a position as a tenure track Assistant Professor at University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dr. Shirtliff continues his research and teaching interests in host pathogen interactions, biofilm infections, and treatment and prevention of biofilm infections and was promoted to Full Professor with tenure in 2016. He has obtained over $8 million from state, national (NIH and DOD), and international funding agencies in the past 10 years. In order to move his research from bench to bedside, Dr. Shirtliff has co-founded two companies based upon his laboratory discoveries, Serenta Biotechnologies, and CelerDx.

Bert Slade, MD, Managing Director, Chisholm Clinical Research Services

Dr. Slade is a dual board-certified subspecialist in pediatrics and clinical immunology with more than 25 years of industry-based experience in clinical research. After holding academic appointments at the University of Michigan and Cornell University Medical Center, he was recruited from academia to work with Dr. Jonas Salk on an HIV therapeutic vaccine joint venture, taking the position of Director of AIDS and Immunology at Rhône-Poulenc Rorer. From there Dr. Slade went on to join 3M Pharmaceuticals as Chief Medical Officer. During his twelve years at 3M, Dr. Slade oversaw the development and licensure of multiple products, including a groundbreaking new class of immune response modifiers for viral infections and cancer. When 3M sold its pharma business, Dr. Slade joined DFB Pharmaceuticals in Fort Worth, TX, where he served as Chief Medical Officer for Healthpoint Biotherapeutics. Smith & Nephew plc acquired Healthpoint in 2012, bringing Dr. Slade into the realm of medical devices in the role of CMO and Sr.VP of Research & Development for the wound care division through the end of 2016. Dr. Slade earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., followed by his medical degree from State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y.
