Balance Innovation & Design isn’t a typical design consultancy. We don’t jump head-first into the design of solutions until we understand the messy reality of the problems our clients hire us to solve. As an Experience Strategist at Balance, you’re a researcher, strategist, and designer. You explore the problem space and shape solutions. You don’t write reports; you create tools that help the team make the best possible design decisions. Where you’ve been isn’t nearly as important as where you want to go. We’re looking to build our team with inspired and ambitious people, people who are always looking to improve themselves and the world around them.

How You’ll Contribute:

  • You will become a proficient practitioner of the Balance Innovation Framework, a human-centered framework for innovation based on core concepts of Jobs To Be Done, Design Thinking, and Goal-directed Design.

  • You will build upon and improve the Framework based on your experiences and expertise.

  • You will lead and co-lead projects.

  • You will manage external contractors on projects.

  • You will conduct, analyze, and synthesize research into tools that inform the design of products and services.

  • You will contribute to the end-to-end design life cycle from ideation, prototyping, and launch.

  • You will champion and evangelize the value of human-centered design and Balance values.

Who You Are:

  • You have 3-5 years of experience in evaluative and generative research or equivalent roles.

  • You have experience working directly with the teams designing and developing solutions.

  • You have facilitated end-user and stakeholder interviews.

  • You have analyzed qualitative research data and (to a lesser degree) quantitative research data.

  • You have demonstrated experience synthesizing insights into strategic design documentation, like design personas, experience maps, guiding principles, and feature constraints or requirements.

  • You have led or co-led research projects of any size.

  • You are motivated and have a bias towards action.

  • You know how to assess a situation and adjust your approach as necessary.

  • You are confident and have grace under pressure; you thrive when presented with a challenge.

  • You are a lifelong learner, always in search of new knowledge, experience, and perspective.

  • If you have a background in design, your focus is on the design of digital products.

  • Bonus, but not required: You have experience designing products or services (e.g., Information Architecture, Interaction Design, Visual Design, Industrial Design, etc.)

  • Bonus +, but not required: You have experience with research and strategy for physical and digital products.
